Mitie charges forward on electrical works for new MYTILINEOS project
- Mitie has secured a new project with MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals, to deliver electrical grid connection works for a solar PV development site in Leicestershire
- The £4m project will be undertaken by Mitie’s G2 Energy business and will see the company deliver a range of services including site surveying, designing, cable jointing, and network cable installations
- The project is expected to generate enough electricity to serve 18,000 homes and save approximately 16,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year
Mitie has been appointed by MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals, an international industrial company with a focus on integrated development of renewable energy sources (RES), to deliver the electrical grid connection works for a solar PV development site in Barkestone, Leicestershire. The project will be undertaken by G2 Energy, Mitie’s Independent Connections Provider (ICP) and electrical energy contracting business.
As part of the project, G2 Energy will be responsible for designing and building the 132kV grid connection works for a 50MW AC solar farm. This will include carrying out civil engineering, procurement, and construction work such as site surveying, cable jointing, network cable installations, transformer and switchgear installation and commissioning. The project will also be supported by National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) which will carry out some of the non-contestable electrical works on the existing high-voltage overhead lines at the site which are required to facilitate the grid connection.
Once connected to the grid, MYTILINEOS’ solar PV development will be able to generate enough electricity to serve 18,000 homes and save approximately 16,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year1, equivalent to the amount produced by 7,174 return flights from New York to London2. Installed at nearly three metres high, the solar panels will be high enough to allow farming activities to continue at the site including allowing sheep to graze underneath the panels.
This new project with MYTILINEOS highlights G2 Energy’s industry leading decarbonisation expertise, as signalling Mitie’s overarching commitment to accelerating connections to the national grid and helping to support the UK’s transition towards net zero.
Matt Brailsford, Head of Projects Construction and Development, Mitie, said:
“The development of more grid connections is vital for creating and storing renewable energy as we continue moving towards a net zero future. We’re proud to be bringing our electrical engineering and decarbonisation expertise to this new partnership with MYTILINEOS. Through the delivery of specialist sustainability projects, we’re supporting our customers in decarbonising their operations and achieving their net zero goals.”
